Farsin Rabiee and Ziad Halub have set up shop in Hackney
After finding that their regional Iranian and Iraqi food wasn’t well represented in London, and after they couldn’t manage hosting any more of their friends for their food, couple Farsin and Ziad turned their passion for cooking into a supper club. Running for over a year in east London, Logma became so popular that the pair have now been able to take it permanent, opening Logma Cafe Bistro in Hackney.
Farsin and Ziad describe the inspiration behind the new space as “modelled on the retro French bistros that popped up all over the Middle East in the early part of the 20th century – and where our parents would hang out and eat, drink and chain smoke. We wanted the food to reflect the warmth you would get at our house, with generosity.”
Open Thursday – Sunday, Logma Cafe Bistro serves a seasonal menu making use of local and organic produce where possible. The menu changes often but you can expect the likes of kofte and aubergine sandwiches, stews with saffron rice, morning pastries, and proper Middle Eastern coffee and tea. We went in on the first day of its soft launch in December for the kofta sandwich and we’re still thinking about it.
From 8th April, Ziad and Farsin will be opening Logma on Wednesday evenings for Logma Lates, where 18 guests will gather around a communal table for dinner. After beginning with sharbat, a non-alcoholic drink made from fruit and herbs, the meal will include dishes that celebrate regional Iraqi and Iranian cooking, like sabzi khordan, oysters with herb oil, gondhoraj lebu, Aleppo pepper and sumac; arak-cured trout with pickled mango; cardoon with pea braise; duck fesenjoon and sholezard, an Iranian saffron rice pudding. Guests will be able to bring their own wines, with no corkage, adding to the feeling that you’re dining in Ziad and Farsin’s home.
