a band that has become hotly tipped as the next big thing for 2011 The Vaccines are playing it cool. Already doing TV appearances ahead of their debut single release things seem to be going swimmingly for them. We caught up with bassist Arni Hjörvar before it all explodes.

US: Tell us how The Vaccines were born and what you sound like?

Arni: Just like any other band I think. Freddie and Justin started putting some ideas together this time last year and called me to join them around December. We sort of slowly worked on this through the 1st half of 2010 and Pete joined in May and that’s when we started properly working. I think we just sound like we want us to sound at the moment. I’ve heard people use every possible mix of influences in trying to define us. We all like good pop music and we like to think of us as making good pop music.

US: There is much hype surrounding you guys, do you feel there is a lot of pressure before you have even released a record?

Arni: Problem with hype is that it’s not generated by a band and therefore you sort of have to forget about it. We’re not walking around saying we’re the next big thing and therefore we’re not generating the pressure of hype. Media have been very generous and nice to us but we try not to pay any attention to it. Its important not to start believing what is written about you, whether it’s good or bad. The only thing we can do is make a good record and play to as many people as we can (or want to listen to us).

US: Describe the song writing process for The Vaccines and what a typical rehearsal is like?

Arni: Justin is the principal songwriter of the band and brings songs either fully formed or as works in progress and we collectively make the arrangements and come up with parts etc. We all love Justin’s songs so it is a great way of working. Whether or not it’s always going to be the way we will work is yet to be discovered.

US: What does 2011 look like for the Vaccines?

Arni: We’re mainly just really looking forward to 2011. We’re aiming to release the record in the 1st half of 2011 and hope to tour as much as humanly possible. We really don’t like having days off and want to have as few as we can. We’re going to the states in January and doing the opening slot of the NME Awards Tour in Feb so we’ll at least have a fun start to 2011.

US: What has been your favourite album of the year and what are you currently listening too?

Arni: I can obviously only speak for myself here, but my favourite record of the year is probably The Suburbs by Arcade Fire and I’m currently listening to Lisbon by The Walkmen. We supported them last week in a church in Manchester and I bought the record there.

US: When you are in London what do you like to do, any cool places you like to hangout?

Haha…not sure about that. We haven’t really had a lot of time to hang out in cool places lately. When we go out together we go for specific things, parties, gigs etc although The Eight Bells in Putney is probably the place we’ve frequented the most and that’s just because of it’s proximity to out rehearsal space. Guess it sort of depends where we’re working at the time.

Current single ‘Wrecking bar (ra ra ra)’ is sold out. Check out the video below from Later.
