As Brits, we’re really good at complaining about the weather, standing in queues amongst over things but it seems we’re also bloody good at this denim malarkey as yet another British denim label is launching. Hawksmill Denim Co. will be joining the list of British denim pioneers such as Dawson, Endrime, Huit and Bethnals to proudly fly the indigo flag. Based in Brighton, the Hawksmill Denim Co. is the brainchild of denim masters of 20 years Fraser Trewick and Antony Smith.
Raw denim is now a staple in most wardrobes, it’s aimed at the purist denim lover whilst the newcomer gets a look in too for both male and females alike. The collection focuses on the historic manufacturing techniques with close attention paid to contemporary fits and premium quality construction. Trewick says, ‘We draw our inspiration from historic English and European workwear. Although the Americans popularized denim in the 20th century, Europe has its own rich design history from which to draw from. The aesthetics of our branding reflect this.’
Each pair is handcrafted from Cone’s White Oak selvedge denim, which is still woven on the American Draper X3 fly shuttle looms from the 1940s. The mill at Cone Mills is the only mill left in the US that produces selvedge denim and the fabric from these vintage looms contain a depth and dimension which is completely unique to the brand. Alongside the 5 fits, there will be two denim jackets and a capsule of cotton twill chore coats. This is definitely a LOTI one to watch, we’re expecting mega things from Hawksmill and look forward to rocking a pair very soon.
Hawksmill launches this AW15 at Selfridges, Oi Polloi as well as other independent stores.
