Volk used to play bass in New Young Pony Club and a few other bands. Since leaving he has set up shop on his own and put out Voice / It’s A Fine Line the first 7″ single from the forthcoming album which came out earlier this week. We managed to get a few words from the man.

US: What made you take the leap to ‘go solo’?

IV: Going solo has never been my intention. I have always been a songwriter and a musician at the same time. While being a part of my previous band I was developing a lot of musical ideas that didn’t fit with what the band was doing. So after our split I just continued working on my own because I wanted l to finish them and make an album. I love creativity within a band, but to write something good together the band chemistry needs to be really special. I guess doing it myself was the quickest way to get on with realising my ideas.

US: Describe your sound and influences…

IV: I have always listened to very different kinds of music. I guess somehow they all meet in my own writing. My parents would play me a lot of classical music. Then I started listening to Pink Floyd, Beatles, Stones, Doors and ELP when I was 14. Afterwards came jazz to which I was drawn because of how it combines complexity and simplicity, up-beatness and melancholy, strict laws and chaos. Artists such Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Bill Evans and Chet Baker all had a big impression on me. When I moved to London I naturally started listening to dance music, post punk, bands like Japan, New Order and Wire.

US: How did the video collaboration come about with Dawid Krepski

IV: A friend of mine Luis Hautemulle put me in touch with him. I loved what he had done, he loved my song and after we bounced a few ideas around he continued working completely on his own. So it was a complete surprise to me when I saw the video for the first time.

US: What is coming up for you for the rest of the year?

IV: Releasing a new single at the end of summer, finishing the album towards the end of the year and starting to play shows.

Igor Volk plays his debut London show 2nd of August at Oh! Inverted World, The Old Queens Head.
