have announced details of their debut album WE ARE HERE which was produced by Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand. The album was recorded in Scotland in the autumn of last year and is due out Monday May 28th. We’ve been hooked by the dance grooves of their latest single ‘Reptile’ which will be released on April 16th. We caught up with lead singer Tom Burke to find out more.

US: Tell us how you got together as a band and what influences form your sound

TOM: Three of us met at a house party arguing over whether Kanye West or Suicide would be next on the Stereo. We have a wide range of influences. That’s really the point of our band: mixing together different sounds to make weird party music.

US: You’re about to complete your tour of the UK, any eventful shenanigans you can tell us?

TOM: Absolutely not.

US: What is on the cards for the rest of the year?

TOM: We’re releasing our debut album in late May and we’ll be on tour constantly playing it out. We can’t wait.

US: You have a single out on the 19th March, tell us more?

TOM: Its called Reptile. Its a song about turning into an Iguana. That’s what happens if you go to too many parties.

US: What new music around at the moment is getting you excited?

TOM: We love the new Grimes album.

US: If you had to sum up CITIZENS! in one epic phrase, is would be…

TOM: Spinning, screaming towers of noise punching Robert Mugabe in the face.
