Indie Doll and the Kicks have been going from strength to strength playing shows all over of late. Morrissey requested them as the support act on a recent tour and they are planning an EP in January. We caught up with front woman Doll to see how things have been going.pop disco upstarts
US:. So the tour has finished, how was it, anything untoward happen in the sprit of rock n roll sense of the word!
DOLL: Well we just got back from Hamburg and Berlin and we basically spent 4 nights running amuck on the streets till 6 and 7am in the morning and I have come back with a huge crush on our German tour manager…naughty!
US: How does the song writing process happen for you guys, is it a band effort or does someone spark the initial idea, what comes first the lyrics or the music?
DOLL: It really happens very collectively in a number of different ways …Sometimes I will write a verse and a chorus on guitar or piano and then we’ll build the song around that and sometimes the one of the guys will have an idea for a bass line, drum beat or guitar line and that’s how it starts…We are all good songwriters which I think puts us at a huge advantage as we all respect each others opinions and together we can build something we’re all really pleased with. I always write the full lyrics last although I usually know the theme of the song beforehand…
US: Do you pay attention to the first band on at your shows, have there been any bands that have got your attention recently, who are they and how did they Sound?
DOLL: Yes at our Last London show at Hoxton Bar and Grill the first band on were called Kites and I thought they were really promising…..they had only been together a few months I was very impressed. You know what I would love to say that we always catch the first bands playing but in truth it’s really hard as after we sound check we usually have only a little time to get dinner and be back to get ready…. We do try though and we always check them out on myspace first..
US: What does 2011 look like for doll and the kicks?
DOLL: Busy! We Just got asked to play officially at SXSW festival 2011 which we are really excited about as we had a blast this year…. Our USA publishers Ultra records also want us to get to LA for some showcases and we have a full UK and European tour already booked for February and March…not to mention our EP release for late January and more recording.
US: What do you guys do to relax when you’re in London, any favourite hangouts or places of interest for fashion and music?
DOLL: Absolutely…a good friend of mine used to work at The Book Club so you could find me in there a lot they have some great nights on… I Live in East London so mainly around that area… The Macbeth, The Commercial Tavern… shit these are all pubs! There is a great club night called Your Mums House….Ok my favourite evening at the moment is something called BUG at the Southbank cinema…. Everyone gets pissed (oh dear drinks again) and Adam Buxton (from the Adam and Joe Show) hosts the evening showing all of his favourite new and interesting music videos on the big screen… It’s only once a month and it always sells out really quickly so I’m not sure I should even be telling you this!
US: What has been your record of the year so far and why? Is there anything from recent artists/bands that influences you?
DOLL: We like to listen to as much new music as possible and whenever we find something we really like it always influences our song writing….. Matt drove Two Door Cinema Club in our van to a gig not long ago and for me those guys are brilliant at writing pop gems….
US: Your quite fond of tattoo’s what’s your most recent and what’s the inspiration behind it?
DOLL: My most recent tattoo is a big one on my forearm of a bird on a rose and another bird flying above it… I booked in to get it done pretty much as soon as had my heart broken really badly…. I think when something really big happens to you, you feel the need to change yourself, to start again in a way and that’s what I felt like when I had this done… It’s my favourite one and I like to think that the two birds represent my Grandmother and Grandfather who were a huge part of my life until they passed away.
