IKEA Is Taking Over the Big Topshop on Oxford Street

And we now have an opening date

When the big Topshop on Oxford Street closed its doors for good in 2021, there were rumours swirling about who or what was going to move into the mammoth space. In the autumn of that year we learned that flatpack furniture and Swedish meatball master IKEA won out and would be the site’s new resident, after paying £378 million for the shop.

The whole building is 22,000 sqm and IKEA will take up three of its seven floors – it’s been announced that beauty giant Space NK will be opening a flagship store on one of the other floors, offering immersive experiences alongside all the products for sale, later in 2025.

IKEA’s retail space will total 5800 sqm, making it a similar size to IKEA Hammersmith. You’ll get the classic IKEA experience with a showroom featuring different roomsets and spaces curated by Londoners (which is unique to this store) to explore; a home planning hub where you can design your ideal kitchen or bedroom; and a market hall with 3500 products, like soft furnishings, small furniture and accessories (just over half of the store’s total range) available for immediate takeaway. Anything else that you can’t fit into one of the blue FRAKTA bags and take home on the tube will be available to order for delivery or collection at another pick-up point.

No trip to IKEA is complete without Swedish meatballs – some might say it’s the entire point of going – and you’ll be able to load up on meatballs, mash and lingonberry jam, or grab a hotdog and an ice cream, at the 130-seater Swedish Deli.

While IKEA has been getting us excited for the opening with its Hus of FRAKTA pop-up shop dedicated to its iconic bags (which closes on 23rd March), we don’t have too much longer to wait as the store will be welcoming customers from 1st May. Prepare to see blue bags dominating the Oxford Street pavements this spring.
