If you’re looking for a real taste of Hong Kong in London, you’re doubly in luck this month as not only is HK milk tea brand HOKO opening a pop-up cafe in Shoreditch, serving up tea, French toast, rice dishes and more, but tearoom-style restaurant The Eight is also open in Chinatown. The 80 cover space on Shaftesbury Avenue takes inspo from traditional Hong Kong tearooms from the 50s, with plenty of classics on the menu, including a range of milk teas and dishes like:
- wonton noodle soup
- baked tomato pork chop rice
- curry fish balls
- roast meats like char sui, roast duck, and siu yuk
- volcano egg on rice
- HK French toast with salted egg
- pineapple bun
The Eight isn’t the only newbie to open in Chinatown recently, with Kung Fu Noodle, the first live noodle pulling restaurant in the area from Alex Yu, has launched down the road on the corner of Shaftesbury Avenue and Wardour Street, so if you haven’t been down there in a while, now’s your time.
