The third site from a Hong Kong duo who's aesthetics and branding is always on point
Husband and wife team Nicole Ma and Ryan Leung, the pair behind HOKO’s Brick Lane café, and more recently, Covent Garden’s Wonton Noodle Bar, have opened their third site just around the corner from the OG cafe on Bethnal Green Road, taking over the old Dinah’s Cat Emporium. Everything HOKO does tends to look considered, and this is no exception: the branding, by Fibi Kung, runs to custom boxes and bags that wouldn’t look out of place in an Acne store, while the fit-out leans into the same clean, slightly surreal aesthetic, all set inside a space inspired by the utilitarian bakeries found in Hong Kong’s public housing estates.
Everything is baked on site in full view of the counter, with the menu covering the usual Hong Kong bakery staples alongside a few of HOKO’s own additions. Expect Hong Kong egg tarts, Ovaltine cream buns, a garlic cone, snow crust char siu buns, a seaweed egg salad bun, swiss rolls, Hong Kong-style toast, soft milk bread and more. Drinks include a signature Hong Kong milk tea, an oat foam coffee served with a choice of three sugar levels, as well as hot tea to take away.
The menu has been a year in development, and there are plans to keep expanding it and introducing new flavours based on customer tastes. HOKO is open daily from 8am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to 6pm at weekends. For more Hong Kong spots read our trend article from earlier this year.
