Historic Pie & Mash Shop Manze’s Is Set to Close

After more than 100 years in the business, Manze’s will close the doors to its Deptford shop next Spring

It’s been announced that Manze’s, one of the city’s longest-running pie and mash shops, will be closing in 2025 as its current owner, George Mascall (the grandson of Michael Manze, who opened the first pie and mash shop under the Manze name in 1902), will be retiring next year after 40 years in the biz.

Though it’s a shame to see another traditional pie and mash shop caught up in the swathe of recent closures, we’ve still got more than a year to visit Manze’s in Deptford before saying goodbye. The shop, which has been in the Manze family for more than 100 years, still makes their classic pies by hand which are served alongside mash and parsley sauce (liquor).

What will happen to Manze’s post-Mascall’s retirement is still TBD, but here’s hoping that it’s something that’ll do justice to the legacy of this Grade-II listed slice of London history.
