Historic Chinese Restaurant Songhelou Is Opening in London

It’s bringing Jiangnan cuisine to the capital

Songhelou was first founded in Suzhou, China more than 250 years ago, during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, and now it’s opening its first international branch in Chinatown this April. The Wardour Street restaurant, set over three floors, will be inspired by the tranquility of Suzhou’s water towns and will be decked out with bamboo, grey stone, antique copper, foliage, and a grey and white colour palette.

The London outpost will also be showcasing the food of Jiangnan, a region immediately south of the Yangtze River in the south east of China. Suzhou-style noodles are Songhelou’s most famous dish – slim, delicate noodles in a sweet spicy dark broth – served with an array of different toppings, such as:

  • sweet and sour squirrel-shaped bass
  • Suzhou-style braised pork
  • stir-fried crab meat and roe
  • sizzling eel slices in oil
  • flavoured crayfish

There’ll be a selection of sweets to finish the meal, like mini rice balls with red bean paste and red date sticky rice steamed cake. And, as per Suzhou tradition, you’ll be able to pair your food with a variety of teas, including Jasmin Silver Needle tea, Osmanthus Longjing tea and Peach Oolong tea. Sounds like Songhelou will be a great addition to the city’s ever-growing regional noodles scene.
