Thelatest vampire showings to take to our screens have showcased a series of chiselled cheek bones, piercing eyes, steel abs and slick hair – it’s no wonder we’re all so fond of these mysterious creatures!
Take true blood as a prime example. This season the story takes on a new twist as Japanese scientists discover a way to create synthetic blood. Instead of remaining mystical creatures of the night, vampires now stand as fellow citizens but even with humans off the menu, residents are still understandably a little apprehensive of vampires in society.
The story is set in the quaint Louisiana town of Bon Temps, where Anna Paquin steps into Sookie’s shoes as the local waitress. Just as vampires are thought of as castouts, Sookie is also a little different from the rest of society. She possesses a gift that allows her to hear what the people around her are thinking – something I think we’ve all longed for at least once or twice in our lives.
Bill Crompton, who plays a handsome 173-year-old vampire, puts his fellow associates to the test when he falls for Sookie. A series of disasters begin to unfold, many of which test their love for one another.
Of course, it’s not just vampires we’ve fallen in love with this year and another series to have taken the TV by storm is The Wire. Described as one of the most critically commended shows to screen yet, this renowned drama series is still challenging viewers and has done so ever since its first showing.
The new storylines released each episode surround drug lords, the working class and the local town’s diplomatic lieutenant. There are five series in total and each focuses on a different plot with many of the central themes concerning social interaction shared by our bloodthirsty cousins in vampire dramas.
You can learn more about The Wire on HBO official site, which reveals an insight into crime in West Baltimore. An interesting pointer about this series is the portrayal of the media and the ever-increasing void between realism and awareness.
Although a variety of cop shows have been aired in the past, this is very different from the others. Law implementations and politics are revealed in a different light, one of the reasons this series is so watchable.
