News we’ve been sitting on for a while has been confirmed
Gordon Ramsay may have just opened the massive 22 Bishopsgate project in the City (including an outpost of his Asian-inspired concept Lucky Cat and chef’s table High, from the three-star Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea) but he’s not done with the London openings just yet. It’s been revealed that Gordon Ramsay Restaurants is in the process of acquiring the Le Gavroche site in Mayfair, with a successful premises licence transfer application having been submitted to Westminster Council by Union Street Cafe Limited, a company that’s attached to his restaurant group.
First opened by Albert Roux and Michel Roux Sr in 1967, Le Gavroche was the first restaurant in the UK to be awarded one, two and three Michelin stars (the third star was lost in 1993). In 1981 the restaurant, known for its classical French fine dining food, moved to Brook Street in Mayfair, and Gordon Ramsay himself spent time in that kitchen in 1989. Michel Roux Jr took the reins of Le Gavroche in 1991 and remained at the helm until he decided to close the iconic restaurant in January 2024, after 56 years in business, to pursue a better work/life balance. He now runs Chez Roux at The Langham.
It’s widely rumoured that Matt Abé, former chef patron of Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, will be heading up the new project and that Ramsay won’t be acquiring the Le Gavroche name with the purchase, but that’s all we know so far. Watch this space for more….
