01MAY DUM DUM GIRLS @ SCALA
Opening the Gig Guide this month is our favourite shoegazing band Dum Dum Girls who will bring to London’s Scala on May 1st their recently released third album ‘Too True’. To revel in some blissed-out noise pop is the best way to kick off this May, no doubts!
01 MAY DAMON ALBARN @ THE GREAT HALL, QUEEN MARY UNIVERSITY
Following the release of his first solo album ‘Everyday Robots’ on April 28th, Damon Albarn is going to play an intimate show at Queen Mary’s The Great Hall. Featuring cameos by Brian Eno and Natasha Khan, he will perform his latest work with a full band including guitarist Seye, drummer Pauli The PSM, bassist Jeff Wootton and keyboardist Mike Smith. Be sure to catch him before he heads to Europe and then headlines Latitude Festival in July!
10 MAY THE HORRORS @ 100 CLUB
Releasing their fourth album ‘Luminous’ via XL Recordings on May 5th, goth-rockers The Horrors will play an intimate gig at 100 Club in celebration. We loved their second single ‘So Now You Know’ and we bloody can’t wait for more!
14 MAY JAGWAR MA @ ELECTRIC BRIXTON
Aussie trio Jagwar Ma will grace the Electric Brixton’s stage on May 14th, so you better get yourself down to this. When they released their debut ‘Howlin’ in 2013, they gained praise from Noel Gallagher himself, in addition to comparisons with the Madchester scene of the 1980’s. Latest single ‘Uncertainty’ had us dancing in psychedelic trance, so we are definitely not going to miss them playing it live!
15 MAY CARL BARAT & THE JACKALS @ XOYO
Mr Carlos Barat recruited his new band The Jackals via facebook and take on XOYO. Among over 1000 applicants for Barat’s online advert, guitarist Billy Tessio, bassist Adam Claxton and drummer Jay Bone are currently forming his new project and will perform live for the first time the demo tracks that Barat recorded with Johnny Marr and Andy Burrows earlier this year. While waiting for their new album, due for release in September, make sure to catch them live, supported for this date by Lois & The Love and Trampolene.
16 MAY SCOTT & CHARLENE’S WEDDING @ THE LEXINGTON
Supporting new album ‘Any Port In a Storm’, these four Melbourne lo-fi rockers will take The Lexington’s stage on 16 May, before heading to the Netherlands and Germany. The album raised positive reviews after its release and we can’t wait to hear it live!
17 MAY FAT WHITE FAMILY @ RED GALLERY
Brixtonites Fat White Family are playing the Red Gallery so get ready for some serious chaos, as they’ll be performing tracks from their debut album ‘Champagne Holocaust’. Be warned, you will probably see a pennis at some point!
17 MAY ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN @ O2 SHEPHERD’S BUSH EMPIRE
Liverpudlian Echo & The Bunnymen are back, headlining a UK tour in support of their forthcoming album ‘Meteorites’, the band’s first work after four years of hiatus. First single off the album is track ‘Lovers On The Run’, released on May 26th via 429 Records/Caroline. Catch them on May 17th at the o2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, where they’ll do magic for your ears.
23/24 MAY ARCTIC MONKEYS @ FINSBURY PARK
Yes, the Monkeys are finally, definitely back. After playing two sold out shows at London’s Earl’s Court last October, on the 23rd and 24th of May they’ll be causing all sorts of trouble in Finsbury Park supported by the likes of Miles Kane, Tame Impala and Royal Blood. They will then launch on a worldwide tour culminating in a headline slot at Reading & Leeds Festival in August.
24 MAY – CROCODILES @ THE LEXINGTON
Our favourite Californian rockers are on tour all month and have in effect made it into the Gig Guide twice as they are on the bill with Dum Dum Girls at Scala. However this see’s them headline the King’s Cross haunt in a more intermate setting where sweat and beer will mix in a fury of excitment and chaos.
