One of London’s best chippies has gone west
Poppies has been serving up traditional fish & chips to the people of Spitalfields, Soho and Camden for years and now west Londoners can finally get in on the action as a Poppies has just landed in Notting Hill. The Portobello Road site, previously home to a bank and a butchers, has been decked in proper Poppies style. There’s retro memorabilia, brass fish-shaped door handles, fishing paraphernalia, a red Ketchup Corner, and a Liam Dickinson portrait of Poppies founder Pat ‘Pop’ Newland, with the checkerboard floor, wooden panelling, and reuse of the old vault and money chute providing a nice nod to the building’s history.
As at all other Poppies restaurants, fresh, sustainably sourced fish (including haddock, cod, plaice, rock and lemon sole) is coated in Pop’s original batter and fried in groundnut oil, and paired with chunky hand-cut chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce, gherkins, pickled onions, curry sauce and more. And yes there are pies, saveloys and battered sausages on offer too if you prefer a meatier accompaniment to your chips.
