GATWICK IS HOME TO THE UK’S FIRST AIRPORT REUSABLE CUP TRIAL

Hot on the heels of Waitrose’s first plastic free trial, we love what Starbucks has come up with for its Gatwick Airport store. In partnership with Hububb, the Starbucks inside Gatwick’s South Terminal is hosting the UK’s first airport reusable cup trial in a bid to cut down on waste. Passengers can get their drinks in a reusable cup rather than a paper one, which they can drop off at a designated spot before boarding their flight. If successful, this ‘closed-loop’ system could be rolled out to any travel hub, potentially reducing the need for thousands of disposable cups over a year.

Coffee shops promoting the use of reusable cups is nothing new but though people may carry their own day to day, they tend not to bring them when travelling. And though the paper cups can be recycled, a huge number of them still end up in landfill, so there’s certainly a need for a scheme like this. We hope to see it in more airports and train stations before long.
