Former Camden Hotspot Gilgamesh is Opening in Covent Garden

It’s the London restaurant opening absolutely no one had on their 2023 bingo card

Cast your mind back to the late 00s – Instagram didn’t exist, people still read Heat magazine, and celebs were papped at Camden restaurant Gilgamesh on the regs. The Babylonian-themed venue in the Stables Market was seriously OTT: it had its own escalator entrance, a retractable roof, wood carvings everywhere and a pan-Asian menu that included everything from Beijing dumplings to Chilean sea bass to sashimi platters. It closed in 2018, managing to last over a decade, and now, seemingly out of nowhere, Gilgamesh is making a comeback.

It seems that everything is remaining the same, bar the location, as the new Gilgamesh is setting up shop in Covent Garden rather than Camden. There’ll still be opulent Babylonian interiors across a three-floor, 160-cover space; there’ll be hand-carved bronze and wood; there’ll be a lot of people getting their photograph taken inside; and there’ll be a menu featuring dishes from across Japan, China and South East Asia, including:

  • sushi, sashimi and nigiri
  • grilled Dover sole with basil
  • Japanese pizza with tuna truffle mizuma
  • crispy duck, watermelon and cashew nut salad
  • lamb chops
  • aubergine miso
  • Black Angus ribeye

London isn’t short of restaurants where the food comes second (or even further down than that) to the ‘vibes’, so it’ll be interesting to see how Gilgamesh 2.0 fares.

Opens Mon 4th December 2023
