For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy Is Back in the West End

Ryan Calais Cameron’s Olivier Award-nominated show is returning to the stage

Following three sold-out runs – originally at the New Diorama Theatre, then at the Royal Court and then its first West End staging at the Apollo Theatre – For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy is back on the West End, this time for a nine-week run at the Garrick Theatre.

Inspired by Ntozake Shange’s seminal work For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf, the play was conceived by Ryan Calais Cameron in the wake of Trayvon Martin’s killing in 2012 and has been developed over the last ten years with help from young Black men and mental health groups.

For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy uses six young Black men – Onyx, Pitch, Jet, Sable, Obsidian and Midnight, played by Tobi King Bakare, Shakeel Haakim, Fela Lufadeju, Albert Magashi, Mohammed Mansaray and Posi Morakinyo respectively – who meet for group therapy to explore topics like sex, colourism, love, masculinity and trauma, through movement, storytelling, music and verse.

If you didn’t manage to catch For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy on any of its previous runs, we’ve got some good news – we’ve got two tickets for the show up for grabs. Just drop us your info below to be in with a chance of winning and we’ll do the rest.
