Feast Your Eyes on These Pies

Who ate all the pies? These lot did

If there was ever a dish that truly encapsulated British cuisine (aside from a Sunday roast), it would have to be the pie – why else would we celebrate British Pie Week each spring? A staple all over the country, the pie is as much a part of the capital’s culinary fabric as it is anywhere else in the UK, with pie, mash and liquor being one of London’s classic dishes. In honour of British Pie Week, which this year is running from 4th – 10th March, we asked a bunch of London pie enthusiasts to share their fave pie in the city, so that you can celebrate the week in style.

James Dimitri, Food Blogger | Steak & Kidney Pie at The Guinea Grill

One of my favourite spots to go for a good pie would be the Guinea Grill. They’re known for their pies as much as they are their steaks and won a lot of awards over the years. They do a decent steak and kidney pie, or if you want something more impressive, the beef & Guinness pie topped with a fried oyster. They serve it for one but it’s basically big enough to share with some sides and starters. The Guinness isn’t bad here either.

Jules Pearson, LOTI Co-Founder | Fish Pie at FieldGoods

When the weather is cold there’s nothing quite like hibernating at home with a pie and a bottle of wine. I’ve recently discovered FieldGoods, the free-range ready meal company who have a great selection of pies, including a creamy sustainable fish pie topped with buttery mash, and a steak & ale pie with a pastry crust (and they do a cracking side of potato dauphinoise too). The pies come in cute packaging with a sticker stating who made the pie (cheers Leanne!) and are just ÂŁ7.25 for one or ÂŁ12 for two, with free next-day delivery.

Edd Kimber aka The Boy Who Bakes | Chicken Pie at The Marksman

My fave savoury pie is the chicken pie from The Marksman. It’s a pie for two and it’s the perfect thing for a cold and wet London evening. Made with chicken thighs and girolles, all you need is that, some of their fabulous chips and a pint of cider and you’ve got a perfect wintery meal.

Calum Franklin, Chef | Mince Beef Pie at Goddards at Greenwich

My favourite pie is the traditional minced beef pie at Goddards at Greenwich with mash and vinegar. I think it’s the best example of proper east London pie and mash and is like a hug made of pastry.

Ben Smith, LOTI Co-Founder | Chicken, Leek & Bacon Pie at The Clarence

The chicken, leek and bacon pie at The Clarence pub in Stokey. It’s a whopper, has to be shared and goes well with hispi cabbage and a mountain of roasties. Ask for a big spoon.

Dom Rowntree aka Samphire & Salsify | Lobster Pie at Mount St

This is a boujee option for sure. King Charles and Queen Camilla visited Mount St when it opened last year. The lobster pie has been on the menu since the beginning and it’s a right royal treat!
