Tate has revealed its 2026 programme for its exhibitions at Tate Modern and Tate Britain
Tate Modern may be marking its 25th anniversary this year (the celebrations include the return of some iconic artworks) but the gallery group is already looking ahead to 2026 by announcing the exhibition programmes for next year.
Tate Modern will be kicking things off with a bang with Tracey Emin (26th February – 31st August 2026), an exhibition that looks back over her 40-year career with landmark pieces, like her neon and her unmade bed, on show. The other blockbuster exhibition to look out for will be Frida: The Making of an Icon (25th June 2026 – 4th January 2027), a show that will explore how Frida Kahlo became one of the most influential artists of the modern era.
Over the summer, the gallery will also host interactive installations from Julio Le Parc (11th Jun 2026 – 3rd May 2027) and film, photography and installations from contemporary artist Ana Mendieta (9th July 2026 – 10th January 2027), before closing out the season with a group exhibition on photography. Light and Magic: The Birth of Art Photography (8th October 2026 – 14th February 2027) will showcase how pictorialism developed across the world from the 1880s to the 1960s.
At Tate Britain, 2026 begins with the first major solo show from Hurvin Anderson (26th March – 23rd August 2026), where you can see his colour-drenched landscapes, followed by James McNeill Whistler (21st May – 27th September 2026), the first major European retrospective on the artist in 30 years.
Two huge shows will be opening at the gallery in the autumn, starting with The 90s (1st October 2026 – 14th Feb 2027). Yes prepare for a massive dose of nostalgia as guest curator Edward Enninful OBE brings together works from the likes of Juergen Teller, Corrine Day, Damien Hirst, Yinka Shonibare, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan. Then explore the 50-year relationship between two modern British artists with Vanessa Bell & Duncan Grant (12th November 2026 – 11th April 2027), which will include over 250 pieces plus a restaging of Duncan Grant’s studio, specially relocated from his Sussex home, Charleston.
All that and annual commissions at both galleries too? 2026 is shaping up to be one big year for art.
