Well this has got to be a first…a contestant from Come Dine With Me has opened a restaurant. Yes Craig McAlpine, who appeared (and won) on the first season of the programme back in 2005 and then became a chef, has opened Ember on Brick Lane.

It’s all about cooking over embers here (clue’s in the name) with the small plates menu featuring dishes like ember-baked celeriac hummus; smoked sweet potato with verbena harissa; whisky-cured hot smoked salmon with celeriac remoulade; and grilled slow-cooked pork belly with smoked aubergine and beetroot puree. And in a nod to both his Scottish and South African roots, Craig’s got a selection of single malt whiskies and South African wines on the drinks list.
