Refugee Week is returning to the Southbank Centre with a programme that celebrates the resilience, creativity and contributions of refugees. As well as being the 75th anniversary year of the Southbank Centre, 2026 also marks 75 years since the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention, where the rights and protections afforded to refugees were first laid out, so this year’s event is even more significant.
The theme for this year’s Refugee Week is ‘Courage’ and highlights from the programme include the inaugural Counterpoints Lecture by writer and activist Elif Shafak, who’ll be exploring how displaced artists can reshape our understanding; a night of performances co-curated by sitar player and activist Anoushka Shankar and hosted by Nish Kumar; a day-to-night set from DJ collective Our HeartBeats; and short film screenings at Arab Film Club.
