DAVID HOCKNEY’S PORTRAIT OF HARRY STYLES IS GOING ON DISPLAY IN LONDON

The pop superstar was painted by the legendary artist back in the spring of 2022

You’ve seen the portrait doing the rounds on social media – Harry is depicted in all his stripy cardigan and curly hair glory whilst sat on a wicker chair in David Hockney’s Normandy studio – and soon you’ll be able to see Hockney’s painting in real life as it’s going on display at the National Portrait Gallery. Comedian Joe Lycett created a spoof version, which he appeared to sell to Harry for £6 and a Kit Kat Chunky via Instagram DM, so that one won’t be making it into the gallery.

Hockney’s portrait of Harry will be just one of 160 works being exhibited from November as part of the David Hockney: Drawing From Life show, which initially opened in February 2020 but only managed a few weeks before the pandemic shuttered the gallery. The second iteration of the exhibition will feature portraits of his mother, his friend Celia Birtwell, curator Gregory Evans, and printer Maurice Payne, as well as a series of self-portraits, done in a variety of mediums from pencil to acrylic to digital. These will hang alongside thirty new pieces – including the one of Styles – Hockney produced during and after the pandemic, depicting visitors to his studio across 2021 and 2022. No word yet whether Harry will be there for the grand unveiling.
