Hackney is always buzzing with excitement and Crate is a corn stone of that. The brewery, bar and pizzeria sits in the shadows of the Olympic stadium serving up unique craft beer and pizzas. Inside is a large open plan space with an island bar in the centre, with the kitchen busy making dozens of fresh pizzas from scratch – stretching dough and chopping toppings to order. The exposed brickwork and furniture made from recycled pallets are achingly hip, and Hackney wouldn’t have it any other way.
The beers are of the highest quality too, the Crate Golden Ale, a light refreshing beer perfect for summer afternoon drinking, and the Crate IPA which weighed in at a punchy 5.8% and packed a real wallop. A few too many of these and you may end up having an impromptu swim in the River Lea, on which the brewery is situated. The waterway provides the perfect backdrop for a sunny evening, with plenty of tables outside to make the most of the British summer – or whatever passes for summer these days. Other craft beers are also available (this is not a sponsored message!), including Brooklyn, Truman’s and Duvel if the Crate tipples are not to your liking though. The pizzas are great, light fluffy bases and fresh with the Middle Eastern lamb being a firm fave.
