The Flygerians is a Nigerian food business in London run by two sisters, Jess and Jo. Since 2016, they’ve been set on bringing authentic Nigerian cuisine to the capital from their restaurant in Peckham.
Every summer while their parents went to Nigeria, the sisters were packed off to their grandma’s house for six weeks. Although at the time they hated it – waking up at 5am to help their grandma cook while their friends were still asleep – looking back, those mornings gave them everything. Their grandma cooked for her church, for people experiencing homelessness and for anyone who needed feeding. She taught them that everyone deserves a seat at the table, and that’s still at the heart of Flygerians today
Some of their famous dishes include the Naija fish and chips – a fun Nigerian twist on the classic dish, using lightly battered red bream and served with cassava chips. You also can’t leave without trying their ‘two fly chicks’ (named after themselves) – two pieces of chicken marinated in sauce and served with jollof and plantain.
As Jo and Jess say, everyone is welcome in their restaurants. They’re proud of what they’ve built and know their grandma is proud too.
