Co-Owner of The Camberwell Arms and Bambi to Open The Knave of Clubs in Shoreditch

And Patrick Powell will be overseeing the food

James Dye, co-owner The Camberwell Arms, Frank’s, and Bambi, is staying east for his next venture, teaming up with Benjy Leibowitz, (formerly of JKS, inHouse and The NoMad in NYC) to revive Shoreditch pub The Knave of Clubs. The venue, on the corner of Bethnal Green Road and Club Row, was first established in 1880 to serve the community of traders at the Club Row bird market. Closed in the 1980s, it has since been re-imagined as a variety of restaurants, including Les Trois Garcons in the 90s. Now it’s being restored – original features like a tiled floor entry and grand mirrors are being joined by a new bar and open kitchen – and turned back into a pub.

Patrick Powell (ex-Allegra, Midland Grand Dining Room and Chiltern Firehouse) will be overseeing the food at The Knave of Clubs, with Attila Gellen heading up the kitchen. Chermoula-marinated rotisserie chicken, cooked on the custom rotisserie grill and served with chicken fat potatoes will be the signature dish, with the menu also including:

  • venison sausage rolls with spiced ketchup
  • prawn scotch eggs with chilli jam
  • fish cakes with old bay seasoning and lemon aioli
  • grilled cheese & pastrami sandwich with sauerkraut and Russian dressing
  • chicken, porchetta and beef roasts with all the trimmings on Sundays

If you just want to pop in for a drink though, you’ll also have plenty of options. There’ll be pre-batched negronis, classic cocktails and a short wine list on offer alongside cask ales, Guinness and beers from independent London breweries on tap. The Knave is also partnering with Allsopp’s Brewery, who used to own the pub in the 1930s; Allsopp’s is relaunching the Double Diamond brand (the UK’s best-selling beer in the 1970s) and The Knave will be the first pub in east London to have it on tap.

The Knave is opening at the end of February but there’ll be no resting on laurels as a second, separate restaurant, One Club Row, will be opening on the first floor of the building in March.
