Wine Bar and Restaurant Cloth Is Opening in Farringdon This Spring

Set in a Grade II listed building, Cloth will be all about seasonal food and an approachable list of excellent, affordable wines

Two wine importers, Joe Haynes and Ben Butterworth, and a chef, Tom Hurst, are teaming up to open a new restaurant and wine bar in Farringdon this spring. It’s called Cloth, named after the street it’ll call home – Cloth Fair. Nestled next to some of the oldest residential buildings in London, Cloth promises to be an intimate, classic bistro with interiors that reference the building’s history.

Tom (whose CV includes Brawn, The Marksman, Levan, Salon, Larry’s and, most recently, Lasdun) will be heading up the kitchen, serving up seasonal dishes that celebrate the best of British produce. Expect the likes of:

  • Cornish squid, black olive, preserved lemon and lardo
  • Brown crab and Berkswell tagliarini
  • Somerset hogget, grilled cos lettuce, smoked tongue and anchovy
  • Cornish pollock with razor clams, white asparagus and lovage
  • Rhubarb sorbet with blood orange caramel

There’ll also be what sounds like a great value set menu on offer at lunch, priced at £25 for two courses and £29 for three. And in the restaurant’s bar area, you’ll be able to snack on Carlingford oysters and Chardonnay vinegar, charcuterie, cervelle de canut with crudites and fried panisse with roscoff onion and sumac.

As for the wine, half of the list will comprise bottles from Joe and Ben’s own import and supply businesses – including grower champagnes, new-wave Bordeaux and German wines. The other half will be made up of wines from suppliers who champion small, independent, and sustainable producers (such as Emile Wines, The Winery, Fingal Rock, Carte Blanche, Winemakers Club and Raeburn). Plus, there’ll always be by-the-glass options and on Mondays, there will be £5 corkage all day. Cin cin to that.
