CHURCH ROAD SW13 TO OPEN ON SONNY’S KITCHEN SITE

After 33 years, which by London restaurant standards is an eternity, Sonny’s Kitchen in Barnes has shut up shop. Run by Rebecca Mascarenhas and her long-time collaborator Phil Howard (the pair also own Elystan Street and Kitchen W8) who joined as co-owner in 2014, Sonny’s Kitchen was a beloved neighbourhood spot that served modern British food, and it even played host to the Spice Girls and the Rolling Stones.

It’s not all bad news though because the space is being overhauled and will be transforming into new restaurant Church Road SW13. Phil and Rebecca are wanting to support up-and-coming talent at the restaurant so they’ve brought in two rising stars from Elystan Street, Sam Astley-Dean and Alan Parry to lead the kitchen and front of house respectively.

The restaurant will serve up modern British food with dishes like sweetcorn and clam chowder with clam and chorizo crumpet; tartare of beef with beetroot and celeriac; roast grouse with pear, elderberries and hasselback potatoes; monkfish tail with late summer tomatoes and pesto; and port roasted figs with baklava and fig leaf ice cream.

In an effort to operate as sustainably as possible, Church Road SW13 will also have a Little Sprouts menu available at lunchtimes and early evening, which will feature meat-free dishes made from produce that would have otherwise gone to waste. Not only will it be great value at £22 for three courses but £2 from every menu ordered will be donated to a Barnes community project centered around food.

We were massive fans of The Square when Phil was there, and we absolutely love Elystan Street so it’s fair to say that the prospect of this one has got us very excited indeed.
