Chef Dom Taylor Is Opening a Caribbean Restaurant in Ladbroke Grove

Marvee’s Food Shop, named after his mother Marveline, is opening in May

After bringing us a high-end take on Caribbean food with The Good Front Room, which was in residence at the Langham following his winning appearance on Five Star Kitchen: Britain’s Next Great Chef, Dom Taylor is switching things up a bit for his venture. Marvee’s Food Shop, opening inside music and events space UNDR in Ladbroke Grove, will be his take on a Caribbean takeaway, only with plenty of space (60 covers across the indoor dining area and outdoor terrace) to sit in and eat.

It’ll look the part, featuring retro wallpapers and patterns found in Caribbean homes and shops of the 80s and 90s, and artwork by contemporary Caribbean portrait artist Yvadney Davis. For the food, Dom will be taking inspiration from his childhood, including the dishes cooked by his family and the things he ate on trips to Jamaica. The Marvee’s Food Shop menu will include the likes of:

  • bammy and festival waffles with jerk chicken, crispy spiced banana blossom or boneless curry goat
  • callaloo, beef, saltfish and chicken patties with oxtail gravy and dark rum & raisin dipping sauces
  • roast pineapple and heirloom tomato chow
  • lime, chilli and maple plantain
  • spicy pumpkin rice
  • old skool cake and custard
  • roasted plantain & molasses soft serve

Marvee’s will also be doing pineapple punch, peanut punch and carrot juice, with a full selection of cocktails, wines and beers available from UNDR.

Speaking about the opening, Dom said: “Marvee’s Food Shop is something I’ve been dreaming about for years. It’s the kind of place I’ve always wanted to create — one that brings together the food memories that shaped me. From childhood days in Jamaica to watching the women in my family work their magic in the kitchen, and of course, everything I’ve learned from my mum, Marvee. She’s the heart of this project, and she’ll always have a seat in the restaurant. Every project I’ve done has been rooted in love for Caribbean heritage and flavour — and this is no different. But I want to be clear: this isn’t The Good Front Room. That’s its own thing, and there’s more to come on that at a later date. Marvee’s is a different vibe. More relaxed, more everyday. It’s another way for me to keep challenging the stereotypes around Caribbean food in the UK. I can’t wait to open the doors and welcome the community — old friends and new.”
