Checking In | Sandblu Resort, Santorini

This five-star resort is all about breathtaking views and blissful relaxation

“Wait here, I’ll be back with a golden bus,” he said, disappearing into the night. Moments later, a 16-seater bus arrived—just for the two of us. Though the ‘golden’ hue was more of a dull brown, it didn’t matter; the warm night air of Santorini was already winning us over. Even in October, the weather is exceptional, with the island’s dramatic mountains casting shadows under the starlit sky. Not a bad start to our first visit to this dreamy Greek island.

The next morning, we set off to explore the reason for our trip: Sandblu Resort, a luxury hideaway offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, just a five-minute drive from the airport and a short stroll from Kamari Beach. With 27 rooms, 22 suites, and two villas, this resort has a little something for everyone, and we couldn’t wait to check it out.

First Impressions of Sandblu Resort

You know what they say about first impressions—they count. And Sandblu doesn’t disappoint. The resort’s pristine white buildings stand out, like newly whitened teeth, against the mountainous backdrop and the Ancient Thira hill. As we arrived, a buggy whisked us around the grounds, passing by a charming little church destined for future weddings. Next to it, untouched ruins nod to Santorini’s ancient past, discovered during the resort’s construction. It’s clear from the start that Sandblu is thoughtfully designed as well as beautiful.

The grounds are picture-perfect, with lush greenery and soft-toned furnishings scattered throughout. We passed the resort’s two outdoor pools and an indoor one, all set against incredible sea views. As we wound our way up the hillside, we found hidden seating areas that double as serene viewing platforms, perfectly framed by plants and trees. Could it be more peaceful? We doubt it.

Luxury Living: The Suite Life

Checking into our suite felt like stepping into a private slice of paradise. With contemporary decor bathed in natural light, the suite features a separate living room and bedroom, a sleek bathroom, plenty of storage space, and all the high-tech mod cons you’d expect—electric blinds, touch-screen lighting, a coffee machine, and not one but two massive flat-screen TVs. But the real showstopper? The private pool on the terrace, offering stunning views of Kamari Beach and the endless blue Aegean Sea. Each room opens onto the terrace, making it feel like the indoors and outdoors are one. The design is seamless, stylish, and utterly luxurious.

The following morning, we set our alarms for 6am to catch the sunrise. Watching the sky transform from deep red to golden orange as the sun rose over the horizon was pure magic. Moments like this remind you why Santorini is so special.

Dining at Sandblu: From Breakfast to Dinner

Breakfast at Sandblu is served at their main restaurant, Plateia, which overlooks the resort’s infinity pool and offers views that stretch all the way to the sea. Not a bad way to start the day. We helped ourselves to fresh fruit and bread, had it toasted by the ever-smiling waiter, and tried to resist the temptation of the sweet treats on display (spoiler: we came back for them). There’s also a full à la carte menu with everything from eggs any way you like to indulgent French toast dripping in maple syrup. The coffee, tea, and juice selections are endless, ensuring a happy start to any morning.

At dinner Plateia transforms into a refined dining spot, perfect for a romantic evening. We sampled some amazing Greek wines (props to the sommelier), including a chilled red that paired beautifully with the charcoal beef “soutzoukaki”, meatballs topped with a rich cherry tomato sauce and served alongside yoghurt foam. We also enjoyed starters like grilled sardines with wild artichokes and sweet vegetable ratatouille, and a stunning plate of “garida koiladas”—grilled red prawns with black garlic, tomato, and basil. Delicious doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Relaxation and Exploring at Sandblu Resort

Life at Sandblu in October is slow-paced, and that’s just how we like it. The resort winds down as the season draws to a close, giving everything an easy, laid-back vibe. We spent our days lounging by the pool, sipping iced coffees, and exploring the various cosy seating areas scattered around the resort, each offering a new perspective of the breathtaking views.

The Sandblu Spa was the ultimate escape, with an indoor pool, a relaxation area, a sauna, steam room, and several treatment rooms. After a couple of sessions at the gym (packed and used the gym kit for once), we were treated to a 45-minute full-body massage. From the perfectly curated music to the ideal room temperature, every detail was on point. We left feeling completely rejuvenated.

With shops selling art, jewellery, and clothing, plus a cute coffee shop and a wine bar tucked around a lemon tree garden, there’s plenty to explore within the resort. Sandblu also has its own private area at Kamari Beach, with sunbeds, towels, and attentive staff ready to cater to your every need.
