Cadaques is a super cute coastal village in the very north of Spain; it’s only another half hour or so to the French border
The town is famous for its tranquil harbour, pretty cobbled streets, and also for being the former home of Salvador Dali – his old beachside house is now a small museum.
Cadaques is a very popular tourist spot and gets packed in the summer, especially along the seafront. We were there in early August and although it was very busy, it was still a lovely place to be; though if we came back it’d definitely be in the spring or autumn.
Casa Nereta is a boutique design hotel located a bit back from the main part of town, on a quiet residential street. The hotel is actually the former house and studio of the artist Joan Ponç (1927-1984), a surrealist painter and member of the avant-garde movement Dau al Set. The house eventually passed to his son and his wife Romy, and in 2016, Romy and her son James opened Casa Nereta as a hotel.
As you might expect from an artist’s house it’s a beautiful space, amplified further by its conversion into a hotel. James hired the Barcelona based interior design studio Conti, Cert for the project, and the space features iconic lamps from SANTA&COLE and furniture from Marc Morro from AOO in the common areas and rooms. We especially liked the whitewashed walls of the lobby lounge, with its big stone fireplace and comfy chairs.
Rooms are well designed and even the smallest have a king size bed, fitted with crisp Bassols linens, spa rain shower, a TRANSPARENT speaker, Mid/Night sustainable amenities, waffle robes and a stocked minibar.
Casa Nereta is a bit of a vibe and there’s a boutique store selling wines, local designer goods and merch, plus there’s regular events and DJs on the weekend. We ended up joining a wine tasting dinner with local wine distributor Jaume Jorda which was great fun. Bistro Nereta has a regular line up of visiting guest chefs, and for our visit, it was GOTA Wine from Madrid, serving up oysters, beef tartare, and monkfish.
And in the mornings, there’s a fresh healthy breakfast served in the shaded internal courtyard, serving up avocado on toast, chia seed pudding, waffles, and fresh juices.
So if you’re thinking of making a trip to Cadaques, we can very much recommend a stay at the stylish Casa Nereta.
