Once the guesthouse of King Sihanouk, this intimate retreat feels like a mid-century 1960s Californian home, with just 24 suites—12 of which boast private plunge pools. Like the architecture, the interiors of the suites are effortlessly sophisticated with a monochrome colour palette, floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open onto private courtyards, and a minimalist approach that embodies Aman’s signature quiet luxury. While the design is understated, the service is anything but, with every detail meticulously catered to.
The tranquil grounds, complete with two serene pools, daily complimentary afternoon tea, yoga sessions, and even a vintage Rolls-Royce – the very one that once transported Jackie O – make it tempting to never leave. But Amansara ensures that exploring is just as luxurious as staying in. Their curated experiences, like the sunrise Angkor Wat tour, make venturing out, even at the crack of dawn, a breeze. We did the guided sunrise tour which starts at around 5am in the hotel’s own tuk-tuks complete with fresh coffee, fruit, and pastries to go.
Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable, not only sharing the rich history of the temples but also knowing exactly how to gain the earliest access – we were among the first inside Angkor Wat that morning. Once we’d visited a handful of temples we headed for a much needed rest to Amansara’s Khmer village house, located in the Angkor Wat World Heritage Site, where we enjoyed a traditional Khmer breakfast while watching village life unfold below.
Meanwhile, back at the hotel dinner was served poolside, accompanied by a live Cambodian band, including a former royal singer and Khmer dancing inspired by the inscriptions and carvings we had seen earlier that day on the temple walls. Amansara is not just a place to stay – it’s an experience, a journey into Cambodia’s past and present, wrapped in the cocoon of Aman’s legendary hospitality.
