If you’re planning a staycation to the Lake District, you’ll find that most of the hotels fall into one of two categories: your basic B&B guesthouse or your classic country house hotel. There are some fab places in both categories but if you’re after something a bit different, then we can very much recommend you take a look at Absoluxe Suites in the cute little town of Kirkby Lonsdale.
It describes itself as a luxury B&B, and although it is indeed in a charming townhouse, the similarities with a B&B really end there (in a good way!). There are just four suites at Absoluxe, each designed along a particular theme: The Oasis (complete with hot tub!); The Orient; The Parisian; and The Columbus, where we stayed for a night.
The Columbus is loosely inspired by ‘Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America. This isn’t actually as themed as you might be thinking, in reality boiling down to an old map of the world on one wall, an American flag artwork, wooden ship wheels, and an old vintage telescope. We liked how this was set on a raised platform by the window, as if you might be at the head of a ship. Overall it’s actually a very sleek, modern design with dark woods, grey slate, and leather sofas and armchairs making for a very comfortable experience and a great place to chill out after long walks in the countryside.
Service is excellent too. Ahead of your visit, you’ll get all the info about self check in, as well as information on walks and restaurants in the area so you can plan a few things ahead. You also get a car parking pass which you can use to park in town during your stay which is very handy. Absoluxe is right in the heart of town so there’s plenty of pubs, shops and restaurants to check out within a brief stroll around Kirkby Lonsdale. There’s no restaurant at Absoluxe but they do arrange for you to have breakfast at The Sun Inn just around the corner, which is a nice touch.
All in all, Absoluxe is a great base for exploring the area and the perfect choice for couples looking for something a little more luxurious than your average B&B.
