Aiming to bring a bit of Mayfair glamour to the City, The Devonshire Club is a new members club, boutique hotel, restaurant, and bar all rolled into one. Located on Devonshire Square, in a former East India Company warehouse building, the location is pretty ideal if you’re working in or wanting to explore east London and it’s also only a stone’s throw from Liverpool Street for getting into town easily.
On the ground floor you’ll find the public areas, comprising a very spacious restaurant and two bar areas, one of which is in a lovely bright conservatory style space. We were staying on a Sunday so we were able to check out the restaurant’s Sunday Picnic Brunch, which at £30 per head is great value for what’s on offer (there’s the option to add bottomless Prosecco too for £15).
You start of with a selection of starters from a buffet, where you can choose from salads, hams, fresh oysters, and seafood. Be careful not to fill up too much though as The Devonshire does one killer Sunday roast, a roast beef carved table side from a trolley. We love this old school service and the beef, gravy, Yorkshire puds and roasties were all spot on – we even asked for seconds. For dessert, it’s back to the buffet where we fell in love with the fresh doughnuts which you can dunk into pots of vanilla cream and raspberry jam.
[URIS id=97141]After all that, it’s a good thing that it was just a short lift ride up to our room where we collapsed with the Sunday papers. The rooms are simple and modern and have everything you need, from robes and a Nespresso machine to USB wall plugs and a flat screen TV with Apple Airplay so you can stream whatever you fancy from your iPhone. The marble-clad bathroom has a huge rainforest shower, Elemis products and, best of all, a big bath to soak in.
Elsewhere, the hotel offers a small gym and a members floor which features two separate bars, lots of cosy sofas, and fully stocked bookshelves – it’s a great place to both work and to have a few drinks. For a Member’s Club it has a relaxed unpretentious feel and we also like that they’ve connected with other clubs all over the world to offer access when you’re travelling.
Whether you’re looking for a room for the night, a place to eat, or the club facilities, The Devonshire Club is a great shout, successfully offering something that feels contemporary and accessible in the heart of the City.
