LOTI EATS | CASA FOFO

Adolfo De Cecco, who was previously Head Chef of tiny Michelin-starred Hackney restaurant Pidgin has just opened his own place, Casa Fofo. He’s not flown far from the nest either, as he’s taken over the old Lardo Bebe site on Sandringham Road, a short walk from his previous employers. The space is on the cosy side but it’s nicely designed with some seats by the open kitchen, a basement communal table, and outdoor seats in the back garden.

The concept is basically the same as Pidgin, although here the menu will change every day rather than week and the six courses come in at £39, a tenner cheaper than Pidgin. When we visited recently there was a definite hint of Asian flavours running through many of the courses, including an early dish of congee with fresh crab and peas. Then there was the baby violet artichoke – the best dish of the night – smothered in XO sauce and furikake (chopped seaweed and sesame seeds).

For dessert there was even black bean spiked with a healthy dose of chilli and topped with rhubarb – probably not a dish for everyone but it was certainly interesting. In truth we probably prefered the pre-dessert, a smooth creamy scoop of pine ice cream surrounded by a bright pink strawberry granita.

If you’re only after a light bite and a glass of vino, you can also choose from the snack menu which features plates like sourdough focaccia with lardo and jalapeno and beef with shiso and cucumber.

Casa Fofo is an ambitious little neighbourhood spot and obviously with the menu changing so regularly everyone will probably experience something totally different. Although for us not all the dishes were entirely successful, there was definitely enough to recommend checking it out if you’re in the area.
