Get 50% off at Peckham’s New ‘Britalian’ Restaurant

Café Britaly will be part Italian, part greasy spoon

In a London currently gripped by Italian-American food, two Bocca Di Lupo alums are steering things in a slightly different direction and opening up an “authentically Britalian” restaurant. It’s called Café Britaly and it’ll be landing in Peckham this May with a menu of playful and nostalgic renditions of beloved Italian dishes.

The concept comes from general manager Richard Crampton-Platt (formerly of Bocca Di Lupo and Gelupo) and chef Alex Purdie (formerly of Bocca Di Lupo and St. JOHN) and is designed to pay homage to London’s Italian-run cafes. As Richard puts it, “Café Britaly wishes to rediscover that legacy and revitalise it in a way that’s resolutely modern with a tinge of nostalgia.”

They’ll be serving up ‘Britalian’ takes beloved Italian dishes, as well as a range of British classics updated with Italian ingredients. Expect the likes of spaghetti carbonara made using cream and topped with a greasy spoon-style fried egg, and a ‘Full Britalian’ breakfast comprising fennel sausages, fried pizza dough and beans inspired by the Tuscan dish fagioli all’uccelletto.

The interiors will give a nod to those old-school Italian-run cafes too, with mid-century posters, green linoleum floors and pink banquette seating. And while the idea of a ‘Britalian’ restaurant may ruffle some feathers, Richard has a message for Italian food purists: “We don’t want to start any arguments – just conversations!”
