BRIXTON VILLAGE IS CELEBRATING NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL

Brixton Village is getting in on the Notting Hill Carnival festivities with a new programme of events in celebration of Caribbean culture. In the run-up to the carnival itself, which is takes place across the August Bank Holiday weekend, Brixton Village will be welcoming a range of artists, performers and musicians who’ll be taking over the market with events centred around dance, music, and education that anyone can get involved in.

Kicking things off will be Dende Nation, the UK-based Samba-reggae Bloco, who’ll be hosting a series of Afro-Brazilian dance and drumming workshops on Mondays and Tuesdays, with a final performance in collaboration with London schools, community groups, and dancers from Bristol, led by Vero Leopoldino on 28th August. On Wednesdays, acclaimed dancehall instructor Miss Rose will be teaching dance classes at BRXTN Village Studios. And for two evenings, the Island Girls Rock will be joining the roster with a live podcast recording on 11th August all about body positivity and a takeover of the market’s courtyard on the 20th, accompanied by DJs playing Soca and traditional carnival music, a live steel pan band and food. There’s plenty more where that came from too, so if you can’t wait to get celebrating carnival, make sure to keep an eye on what’s on at Brixton Village.
