BRANDS TO BUYCOTT | # 12 KANKAN

The beauty and personal care industry is one of the worst offenders when it comes to plastic, as a lot of products contain microplastics or come in single-use plastic packaging. Reusable and refillable products are a great solution to this but lugging around huge cartons of shampoo and soap isn’t always the most convenient thing. Enter KANKAN. Created by Eliza Flanagan and Mary McLeod, KANKAN is essentially soap in cans and is here to make refills simple.

Unlike plastics, which can only be recycled a couple of times before they’re no longer recyclable, aluminium cans have no such lifespan. Not only are cans infinitely recyclable, it’s already very easy to recycle metal in the UK in terms of both infrastructure and cost, and it takes 95% less energy to create a new can from recycled materials. Cans are also lighter to ship so that helps to knock down emissions too.

So when you crack open a KANKAN can, you can dispense your hand or body wash into a glass bottle (KANKAN starter sets include these) and then pop them into your recycling bin safe in the knowledge that they’ll be turned back into another can. And it’s not just the packaging that has been thoughtfully designed, the soaps themselves are vegan, cruelty-free, palm oil-free, free from any artificial nasties and handmade using natural ingredients in the UK.

As part of their commitment to being carbon neutral, KANKAN has also partnered with onetreeplanted.org to plant a tree for every can sold. You’ve heard of a six-pack of beer, now it’s all about a six-pack of soap.
