Black Pound Day, which aims to encourage people to swap their usual purchases and spend money with UK Black-owned businesses, was founded by award-winning artist Swiss in 2020 in an effort to help support the Black economy – it was found that for every pound a white household makes Black Caribbeans earn 20p whilst Black Africans earn just 10p. In just two years Black Pound Day has gone from hosting a pop-up shop in Westfield London last year to its very own permanent site in the shopping centre.
Opening on 25th June, the store will feature products from more than 80 Black-owned businesses across haircare, beauty, fashion, homeware and more, including recent Dragon’s Den success story March Muses. The launch of the new shop will be a significant step for both Black Pound Day, which now boasts over 1500 businesses from across the country on its directory, and for the growth of the Black economy. As Swiss has said, “We are so excited to be in a position to create this opportunity to bring the best of our homegrown Black brands to the general high street consumer, ensuring sustainability and consistency all year round.”
