Big Night Is Bringing ‘Food on Sticks’ to Hackney

The former Nest site on Hackney’s Morning Lane is getting a new resident

After set menu spot Nest swapped its Hackney home for a bigger site in Shoreditch last autumn, we’ve been waiting to see what’s taking over the site and now we know. Chefs Joshua Ralphs and Jack O’Connor, who met working at the now-closed Larry’s in Peckham (and who, between them, have worked at Flor, Lasdun and Jolene), are opening Big Night there this month.

The pair are taking inspo from yakitori izakayas but are clear that they’re not opening a Japanese restaurant – instead they’ll be putting British-ish produce on sticks and grilling them over charcoal as well as cooking with other ingredients they love, like lamb hearts, smoked beetroot, kimchi, pickled mussels and miso banoffee. We don’t have a menu yet but we’re being promised innovative, fun food that’s made for eating alongside a beer.

We’re also being promised big vibes at Big Night, with the pair saying on Instagram that “we want everyone to feel at home here, a place for people to come together, the tables will be communal, you’ll be asking your neighbour to pass the chilli oil and cheersing the whole table with a round of shots and sauerkraut. The energy will be lively and generous, the music loud and the lights low.”

If that sounds like your kinda place, you can get into Big Night on Thursday – Sunday nights, and you’ll be able to take a little piece of it home with you too as their seasonal house ferments will be available to buy.

Opens Thurs 11th January 2024
