Everyyear, 20 million tonnes of food goes to waste in the UK. That’s a hell of a lot of waste and a crime when we think of the famines going on around the world and people in the UK who can’t afford to feed themselves. A large chunk of this waste comes from restaurants and supermarkets who have to throw away perfectly fine food due to regulations.
However, a group of conscientious East London chefs are taking matters into their own hands and organising The Beggars Banquet, an evening of fine dining with food salvaged from shops and restaurants who would otherwise have thrown it away. So what if the vegetables are a little misshapen or not quite the right colour? They will still taste great!
The theme of the evening is ‘Tramp Chic’ (or dereliqte to anyone who has seen Zoolander) so dress to unimpress! They want unironed shirts and messy hair, but you should probably still have a shower. Tickets are just £20 for five courses, great value. The event is a fundraiser for The People’s Kitchen and the Koyaanisqatsi Trust, a sustainability charity.
This special one off event will be hosted at Luna Park on Fish Island in Hackney with a special secret afterparty at an undisclosed location following the meal with Black Cat Soundsystem behind the decks which is free to all Banqueters. Five courses, entrance to a top secret club night and doing your bit for sustainability? Can’t say fairer than that for £20!
