Back into the limelight Band Of Skulls will be appearing at London Electric Ballroom on May 19 in addition to slots at Glasto and The Great Escape. The band have also just announced an Autumn UK tour which included a night at London’s Roundhouse on October 26. We caught up with Emma Richardson from the band to find out the stories behind ‘The Song That…’
Got me into music…
The Beatles | Dizzy Miss Lizzy
When I was little I remember being allowed to play my parents records and Help by the Beatles was one of my favourites. I used to sing along to all the harmony parts and then this song Dizzy Miss Lizzy came on and the sonics of it were really exciting and seemed so wild at the time. It got me and my brothers jumping up and down on the furniture and I was hooked. I used to play it over and over. It opened up a whole world of music for me.
Reminds me of my favourite festival…
The Chemical Brothers | Block Rockin’ Beats
I saw them headlining Glastonbury in 1998 and their set blew me away. The light show was insane and the atmosphere was amazing, everyone was dancing for the whole set. They had such a powerful sound and had everyone in the palm of their hand. It was the first time I’d been to such a big festival and the first time I’d seen them live and I’ll remember the experience forever.
I love this year so far…
The Moulettes | Behemoth
Our friends the Moulettes have a new song out and it’s epic. These guys always have great three part harmonies and insane arrangements and there new record looks like it’s gonna be a treat. Looking forward to seeing them live.
I want played at my funeral…
Tom Waits | Take It With Me
This is one of the most beautiful songs I think he has written. It’s so full of tenderness and lyrically I find it really affecting. He is a genius at creating these different worlds for his songs to inhabit and this song definitely transports you.
I would play in a set to impress…
Little Richard | Lucille
The aim of the game is to get people up dancing and Little Richard will always do this so I’d play Lucille and follow it up with a few other rock n roll classics from Johnny Burnette and his trio and Johnny Kid and The Pirates.
Always gets me up and dancing…
Howlin’ Wolf | Howlin’ for my darlin
Guaranteed winner. One of my favourite blues artists. Such a powerful vocal. And this track has an undeniable rhythm. A close second would probably have to be anything by Bo Diddley who pretty much invented his own rhythm. Twisting till dawn.
Sums me up…
Odetta | Hit or Miss
I was sitting there all by myself, listening to everybody saying be like everybody else, oh you see, I got to be me. Ain’t nobody just like this I gotta be me baby hit or miss.
