US: How did you get together?
SULK: Tomas had seen Andy and Jon play in another band and asked them if they were interested in listening to some tunes he had written and if they would be up for getting involved. We all had all the same influences so it was kind of exciting. Jacob and Bhairav completed the line-up later on.
US: Whats the story behind where you got your name from?
SULK: SULK suited us as a name because we are moody bastards but with a slight sense of humour. It’s also the name of an album by The Associates that Andy and Jon became friends over.
US: Talk us through your influences and how that helps form your sound?
SULK: We’re into loads of stuff, but the main influence on SULK’s music would be British indie from mid-late 80s to early 90s. Songs with strong melodies and dreamy, epic sounds. There’s no agenda in our songwriting, it’s all about what comes natural and feels right. And seeing sound as the façade of the musical body, it has important value to us. Even if a good song should be able to work “naked”, the sound of a song can decide whether you will get into it or not, so we always do our best to get the sound right.
US: What do you make of the Stone Roses reunion?
SULK:Good times. Stone Roses made great music and, I can imagine, worked really hard for it, so it should be in their full right to do what they want with it. I am sure they wouldn’t have agreed to do these gigs if they didn’t have the intention to go out there and blow everyone away. Also, not everyone had the chance to see them live back in the day, so now there’s the opportunity for a new generation to do that.
US: What does 2012 look like for you boys?
SULK: We’re releasing our third single in May. The album is bound to be released in September. In December we’re hoping it’s not the end of the world!
