hearing their fuzz-laden grunge pop this lot have interested us, having formed only recently and rising fast with festival dates on the horizon they seem to be doing all the right things. We caught up with Toto to find out just what the bloody hell is going on and have awarded them our July Band of the Month…ladies and gents, SPLASHH

US: How did you first get together?

TOTO: Sasha and I spent the summer in Australia at my parents house in Byron Bay and started recording some songs for fun. A month later we were back in London writing/recording our first batch of songs. We booked our first show in May and recruited our close friends Tom Beal and Jacob Moore to start playing live as a full band. Jacob arrived from the other side of the world only a few days before our show (possibly the longest commute to a band practice ….ever) haha

US: Tell us about your sound, influences and where you got your name from?

TOTO: We don’t think we have one specific sound, we make music that we feel excited about writing and performing. There’s lots of different influences from electronic to guitar music and everything in between…We came back from Australia still in summer spirits and wanted a name that coincided with the music. It’s tongue and cheek and also seems to fit quite nicely in the total ocean scene :)

US: How does the song writing process happen for you?

TOTO: Basically, Sasha comes around to my place to hang out most days… it’s pretty causal, we have a little mini studio set up in my room. Sasha will sit there and lay down the guitars and vocals whilst I produce it. if it’s good we tend to jump around a bit and have a laugh, it’s a lot of fun at the end of the day.

US:  What have you got coming up for the rest of the year?

TOTO: Some regional dates around the UK, a few festivals and will be working towards an LP later this year!

US: Are there any bands around at the moment that get you excited?

TOTO: Off the top of our heads: Haim, Pond, each House, Grimes, Swim Deep… there’s lots going on at the moment which is getting us excited which is always a cool thing.

US: Where do you hangout in London?

TOTO: Most of our friends live in East London, there’s lots going around here but we like to mix it up a bit – the best is just hanging at our friends places or down at the pub.

Catch Splashh playing live at Birthdays, Stoke Newington on the 26th July.
