asma khan to open calcutta canteen

Asma Khan, owner of Darjeeling Express in Kingly Court and soon-to-be the first British chef featured on Chef’s Table, is opening Calcutta Canteen around the corner on Broadwick Street. It’ll be an all-day, North Indian/Bengali inspired spot, and will be popping up until February (although the concept may well move to a new home after that).

Pau buns stuffed with vegan potato, cashew nut and curry leaves; vegetarian beetroot chop; masala omelette; and beef mince and served with green chilli, coriander chutney and tomato relish, will form the centrepiece of the menu. Asma has also drafted in Tarunima Sinha of My Little Cake Tin to take care of the cakes, with masala chai bundt cake, Indian spiced shortbread cookies and pistachio biscuits all making an appearance.

Drinks-wise, you’ll be able to get that Darjeeling Express masala chai and non-alcoholic apple cider as well as tea from Asma’s very own ancestral tea garden in India. She’s also got a community wall in the cafe, which is a space where women can feature seasonal food and condiments, which echoes the work she does with female chefs at Darjeeling Express.
