Alex Grant and chef Simon Shand are behind the new venture on the site of their old haunt
We were massive fans of Leroy in Shoreditch and were very sad to see it close last year, so news that two former team members are now taking over the site and turning it into a new restaurant is super exciting. Alex and Simon met at Leroy in 2021 (with Simon holding a Michelin star at the restaurant until his departure in February 2024) and now, around six months after the restaurant closed, they’re giving it a new lease of life by turning it into Duchy. Though the space is getting a new lick of paint, the place will feel familiar thanks to the open kitchen and selection of 200 albums for the soundtrack.
Duchy is inspired by the historical Duchy of Savoy, which encompassed a large part of south east France and north west Italy, as well as Simon’s classical French training and passion for game and pasta. He’ll be using seasonal British produce to put his own spin on dishes from the region, including:
- pork shoulder & smoked eel croquettes
- brown crab arancini
- anchovies with lardo on marjoram toast
- roasted pork neck with bagna cauda and courgette
- fresh spaghetti with bottarga and olive oil
- grilled lamb with artichokes
- Dover sole with Grenobloise sauce
- côté de beouf with grilled baby gem and gorgonzola butter
- whole grilled red mullet with baby potatoes and beurre blanc sauce
- cherry and walnut tart
- latte fritto with vanilla gelato
- cannoli with sweetened ricotta cheese
Wine regions like Savoie, Jura, Provence, Piedmont, Rhône, and Liguria sit within the Duchy of Savoy area, so you can expect one hell of a wine list at Duchy. There’ll also be martinis, spritzes, two regional Negronis (the ‘Negroni Savoyard’, with gin, vermouth and bitters from Chambery, and the ‘Negroni Savoiardo’, with gin, Antica Formula and Campari from Piedmont), eau de vies, grappas, amaros, and vermouths on offer. Bring it on.
