AN ABANDONED WALTHAMSTOW CINEMA IS BEING RESTORED

We’ve seen two very successful restorations in London recently in the shape of EartH in Hackney and the Alexandra Palace Theatre, and now to old EMD Cinema in Walthamstow is following suit. Part of the building has already been converted in bar Mirth, Marvel & Maud but the main art deco auditorium has been closed for over twenty years. Now that Waltham Forest Council has got its hands on it, the restoration of the 1000-capacity space can begin.

Back in the day the cinema saw the likes of the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, James Brown, Duke Ellington and Dusty Springfield pass through. For its second act, the council is partnering with Soho Theatre on the programming, although we’ll have to wait until 2022 to get in there.
