She runs the nurse-led aesthetic and wellness clinic Tan&Co, where she delivers cutting-edge treatments to her patients, so if there’s anyone able to bust some myths around this facial, it’s her.

What is a salmon sperm facial?

Let’s clarify the name – it’s a catchy phrase! The so-called “salmon sperm facial” refers to a polynucleotide treatment. While polynucleotides used in skincare are derived from salmon sperm, they are purified DNA fragments that are processed, isolated and highly compatible with human skin. When applied, they act as a catalyst for skin rejuvenation, enhancing healing, hydration, and cellular regeneration. This advanced treatment provides significant benefits far beyond what the quirky name implies.

Where did the trend come from?

The trend of polynucleotide treatments originated in Korea and Italy, where advancements in skin rejuvenation often lead the way. For years, polynucleotides have been utilised in medical settings for wound healing, and their transition into aesthetic clinics is a more recent development. The surge in popularity can be attributed to endorsements from celebrities and viral TikTok videos. However, within the beauty industry, these treatments have been steadily gaining recognition as a trusted option for regenerative skincare long before the current hype.

Why are polynucleotides good for anti-ageing? What are the other benefits?

Polynucleotides are exceptional because they work harmoniously with your skin rather than imposing changes. They stimulate fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, while also soothing inflammation. This means that instead of merely plumping or freezing the skin, polynucleotides encourage natural rebuilding and renewal processes.

Key benefits include smoother skin texture and improved elasticity; a significant boost in hydration, perfect for dry, fatigued skin; softer appearance of fine lines; a radiant glow that emanates from within; effective treatment for redness, scarring, and sensitive skin; and as an alternative for under eye (tear trough) filler providing additional benefits, such as improving skin elasticity, increasing hydration, decreasing puffiness, and lightening dark circles.

In essence, polynucleotides equip your skin with the necessary tools to heal and flourish, making them a powerful ally in the quest for youthful, vibrant skin.

What does the treatment involve?

It’s pretty straightforward. We apply numbing cream first, then the product is injected into the skin using tiny needles – it sounds intense, but most clients say it’s totally manageable. The whole thing takes around 30-45 minutes, and you might notice some little bumps or redness straight after, but they usually settle within 24 hours.

We typically recommend a course of three treatments spaced a few weeks apart to really see the full effect – although even after one session, most people notice their skin looks fresher and more hydrated.

Are there any side effects or drawbacks of having this kind of treatment?

It’s a really safe treatment when done properly – the product is ultra-purified and highly biocompatible, so the risk of reaction is very low. That said, because it’s an injectable, you can expect a bit of redness or swelling straight after, maybe some light bruising, but it’s nothing major and usually clears quickly.

The only drawback really is that it’s not a quick fix – it’s a regenerative treatment, so the real magic happens over time as your skin starts rebuilding from within. But if you’re after long-term results and healthier skin, it’s worth it.

Any other myths to debunk about the salmon sperm facial?

Definitely! The main one is that it’s some kind of spa facial involving actual fish – it’s not. This is a medical-grade injectable backed by science, not a quirky facial with a gimmick.

Also, it’s not just for “anti-ageing” – we use it on clients with acne scarring, sun damage, or skin that’s just feeling a bit depleted. It’s a much broader treatment than people realise. And honestly, once you get past the name, most people are hooked on the results.
