Akira Back is Making His UK Debut with Two Restaurants at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair

Originally slated for spring of this year, the eponymously-named Akira Back and Dosa chef’s table will open in 2024

Michelin-starred chef Akira Back operates 25 restaurants around the world, in cities including Bangkok, Las Vegas, Singapore, Paris, Dubai, Seoul and Istanbul, and now he’s adding London to that list with his openings inside the new Mandarin Oriental Mayfair in Hanover Square. Not content with bringing us just one space, he’s doing three – the 148-cover Akira Back restaurant, chef’s table restaurant Dosa, and cocktail bar ABar Lounge, with a rooftop terrace coming later in the year.

Back is known for mixing inspirations from his childhood in Korea with his modern take on Japanese food and that’s exactly what’ll be on show in London. The menu at Akira Back will include some of his greatest hits alongside exclusives for the capital, like:

  • AB tuna pizza with umami aioli, tuna sashimi, micro shiso and white truffle oil
  • Jeju domi – sea bream with tobiko and chojang
  • 48 hour short ribs, with galbi jjim-marinated Australian wagyu
  • Wagyu tempura wellington
  • Arabian spice dry-aged duck with awase miso, kabocha pumpkin and sancho sauce

If you want something more intimate, Back’s Michelin-starred concept Dosa is also coming to Mayfair, serving modern Korean dishes at a 14-seater chef’s table. And if you want something a little livelier, you can head to ABar Lounge, a late-night cocktail bar with DJs, snacks, and drinks like the Bouquet of Guangzhou (with discarded grape skin vodka, St Germain, lacto-fermented peaches, chrysanthemum & burdock bitter, agave and champagne) and the Javapolitan (with organic quinoa vodka, Cointreau, clarified cranberry, lime, spices and butterfly pea tea).

With Yannick Alleno’s Pavyllon in the Four Seasons Park Lane, Mauro Colagreco’s eponymous restaurant now open at Raffles at The OWO, and Jean-Georges Vongerichten at The Emory still to come, it seems that the trend for big name international chefs at high-profile London hotels isn’t dying anytime soon.
