After a few years online, the Big Cheese Weekender 2023 will be held IRL at markets across London
The pandemic wreaked havoc on almost every UK industry, one of which being British cheese. Both farmhouse and artisan cheesemakers lost huge chunks of business from restaurant closures, leaving them with lots of product and nowhere for it to go. In an effort to help, The Specialist Cheesemakers Association, the Academy of Cheese and the Guild of Fine Food teamed up in 2020 to create virtual cheese festival, the British Cheese Weekender.
Now, it’s back for its fourth year but this time it won’t just be held online. While there’ll still be some virtual events – including tastings, talks, farm tours, chef demos and workshops on cheese and booze pairings – the cheese experts will also be taking over local markets and high-street cheese retailers throughout London.
There’ll be loads of free and ticketed activities to get involved in, from an interactive “Spin The Wheel” cheese accompaniments workshop to a “Day in the Life of a Cheese Judge” event. Plus, there’ll be competitions where you can win cheese courses and hundreds of pounds worth of cheese. If you’re a fan of all things fromage, don’t miss this festival.
